The Challenge | Internet on the Ocean

The internet is not easily accessible in many areas of the world, like the Earth’s oceans. Fishermen, sailors, and others have limited data connection with the rest of the world. Although satellite internet is widely available, it is very expensive for a user to implement. Your challenge is to design a low-cost method of delivering internet to people located far away on the ocean.

DOMAIN : EARTH’S OCEANS

PROBLEM STATEMENT : INTERNET ON OCEAN

Introduction : The Ocean encircles the globe, forming the largest interconnected ecosystem on earth. It provides a huge range of services on which we rely; food, energy, transportation, environmental resilience,Internet data will help to identify illegal fishing activities, track plastic pollution, and prevent vessel collisions. More data will help speed the placement of offshore wind and tide farms, improve vessel telematics, develop smart aquaculture, protect and develop coastal zones and enhance coastal tourism.

Project :

The proposed project deals with the usage of tracking ships mounted with ‘ULTRA GAIN 26 DIRECTIONAL ANTENNA’ for seamless transfer of data using cellular and Wi-Fi signal booster systems. It comprises of a wide band parabolic grid with gain up to +26 dB and has long range over 10 miles. The proposed system includes three way connectivity:
⦁ Ship to Satellite communication
⦁ Ship to shore communication
⦁ Ship to ship communication

The access to internet is provided from satellite to the ships when the range is more than 10 miles.

The access to internet is provided from shore to the ships when the range is less than 10 miles. This reach of network is compatible with all ranges of network including the 5G network.

The antenna features are:

  • Frequency & Gain
  • Operating Temperature (°C/°F)
  • Weather proof

3000-6500 MHz - +26 dB

-40 to +60 / -40 to +140

Tracking Ships are placed at locations where there is dense activity of fishing.

Since there are more number of users (fishermen, sailors, traders and ocean activist) can access the internet, the cost becomes effective.

Benefits of project:

  • Connectivity, communication and sharing.
  • Cost-effective project.
  • Easy remote area access.
  • Information gate to global world.
  • Access to global work force.
  • Internet is the fastest way of getting anything.
  • Business automation increases.
  • Fishing contributes 5% world GDP.
  • Secure 3 billion jobs.
  • Empirical importance increases drastically.

Future expansion of idea : Providing internet access across ocean for future ocean exploration. Expanding our network, facilitate to defence systems.

Challenges Faced-

  • Finding Cost effective ways to provide network on ocean.
  • Finding right antenna for transmission.
  • Finding right data about how to secure the people's data from being hacked.
