The Challenge | Internet on the Ocean

The internet is not easily accessible in many areas of the world, like the Earth’s oceans. Fishermen, sailors, and others have limited data connection with the rest of the world. Although satellite internet is widely available, it is very expensive for a user to implement. Your challenge is to design a low-cost method of delivering internet to people located far away on the ocean.

TunaRay

TunaRay providing cheap reliable internet solution off shore.

TunaRay

Our project TunaRay is able to provide quality internet off the shore at very low cost. TunaRay works by spreading internet connection using floating long ranged wireless extenders,
Ignoring all methods involving satellite which are way too expensive.

Main connection provided by parent site is transmitted into sea at direction towards floating child sites that gains and extend it towards the 2nd child site, allowing it to make a chain. Parent sites that are fixed at shore and children sites both uses directional antenna providing long range connectivity to extend the network smoothly. However to connect surrounding clients, it uses omnidirectional routers covering wide area.
Every child site is mounted on floating platforms that stay aligned using sensors like GPS, digital compass and propellers. On top of that, every boat and ship connected will be nodes taking part in expanding our network coverage as they will be equipped with transceiver.
If floating sites misaligns, boats can still work as a bridge and keep the network acting and in case a child site misaligns while no boat is around, our network considers using DTN (disruption-tolerant-networking) to avoid data packet loss.

Our network can be mapped on the ocean according to marine traffic to come up with routes of our coverage as displayed in the diagram provided via hyperlink.

Previously everyone needed to install equipment costing thousands of dollars but to avail our network they will simply require a transceiver costing around a hundred dollar only with data plan cost starting from around $30 per month and jumps to around $120 depending on user’s bandwidth requirement. On the other hand, every child site’s installation would cost around a thousand dollar only. So the network itself is expandable at low cost.
