Sand and Water| Rising Water

Project Details

The Challenge | Rising Water

Sea levels are rising around the world, and approximately 40% of the human population lives in coastal zones. Your challenge is to help communicate the impacts of rising oceans by creating a visualization tool that illustrates the changes caused by rising sea levels in your region.

Rising Sand

A web-based geographical information system or GIS with augmented reality or AR sandbox display aimed at helping its users visualize the cumulative impacts of rising sea levels and act proactively towards the issues of climate change.

As our ocean warms, sea level rises and according to NASA, sea level rise between year 1880 - 2013 has reached 226mm. Thus, begging the question, will human-caused global warming be pushing us toward a climate crisis?

Sea level rise affects us all, eleven of the world's 15 largest cities lie along shores, 160 million people live along coasts in the U.S and about 3.8 ~ 5.2 million in Alexandria and even more in the Delta! And putting aside problems like sea water intrusion, flooding alone can rise world's annual loses to $1 trillion a year by 2050.

"Are we evil?" ~ Greta Thunberg

Our answer is no, but we're IGNORANT, we live in the dark and it's time to light up some candles.

Rising Sand presents a web-based geographical information system or GIS with an augment reality or AR sandbox display. Backed up by a reporting system, people can elevate their awareness and act proactively toward the crisis.
