The Challenge | Trash Cleanup

Oceanic garbage patches are collections of marine debris that come together due to ocean currents; they have devastating effects on ocean ecosystems. Your challenge is to design a mission to help clean up garbage from the ocean!

AI CLEANING

PreCognition's objective is to predict the movement of pollution across the ocean using artificial intelligence so we can immediately clean and also early preventative measures can be carried out.

AI CLEANING

Based on data collected from NASA's various websites, we develop a prediction of the movement of marine debris and also locating it accurately:

For this we have three separate steps:

  • Using NASA data on the colors of the oceans, we do a comparative study of the colors of the oceans without debris with the colors of the oceans with the debris in order to locate an area where there is the possibility of having marine debris. https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/
  • After locating this region, we study the movement of debris from ocean currents through data provided by NASA, titled Ocean Current. https://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/OceanCurrentsCirculation
  • After that, using a drone we collected images and videos for the rest of our analysis. We have developed a series of machine learning algorithms that can discern an area populated only by marine animals and an area that has debris to avoid confusion in the prediction of marine debris.

With this we have an effective prediction of the location of debris at 75% with more important data.

And finally we publish our research, our results in a website that we designed. To attract government attention, to take effective and rapid action.

In technology we used:

Python for the coding in general,

Spider for the image and videos recognition,

Jupiter to do the data analytics of ocean colors and

NASA API for the data visualisation of ocean currents.
