How important is the sea in maintaining terrestrial life?
According to the Infonet website, oceans are of great ecological, economic, political and sociocultural importance. They are responsible for regulating climate, eating, leisure, transportation and income generation. Therefore, the oceans are fundamental to the survival of the human species and all living beings on the planet. For an idea, approximately 2/3 of the world's population currently lives less than 50 km from the sea (UN-UNESCO). This strip of territorial land corresponds to less than 2% of the terrestrial territory and houses a population of just over 4 billion people. Brazilians follow this worldwide trend of occupying coastal areas, where about 50 million people, or 1/4 of the country's inhabitants, live in municipalities of the Brazilian coastal zone (IBGE). Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, add 97% of the planet's water, concentrate a huge number of species, maintain a large food supply and store mineral reserves
Why did we choose the challenge?
It wasn’t just for participate in NASA Space Apps Challenger 2019, we chose this challenge because we are experiencing a continual environmental disaster in our world, and our oceans receive about 12 million tons of waste each year, presenting various ecosystem problems. Thinking about that, we at espiral believe that it is possible to develop fast and efficient standalone equipment, capable of collecting in a short time and a large volume of floating waste located on all 5 islands of waste, and with this waste generates income for thousands of families.
