The Challenge | Trash Cleanup

Oceanic garbage patches are collections of marine debris that come together due to ocean currents; they have devastating effects on ocean ecosystems. Your challenge is to design a mission to help clean up garbage from the ocean!

Finding trash

Finding trash is a project to use nets in order to remove plastic from river mouth with automatic device clean up.

Finding trash

To develop an effective solution we searched information about the path of trash to the ocean, the impact of each type of material and ways to mitigate the problem.

The main idea is to remove trash from the mouth of rivers using a net which will close a circle (part in land and other part in water). The whole net will rotate and it carry the trash (in order to do that, we can to use a shape - like waves - that "grabs" the trash). To make this rotation possible we thought using an electric motor powered by solar panels and batteries or to use the power of water current.

Also, in order to prevent damages to the marine life, our net will not close the river to the bottom and we propose to use net patterns and colors.

The collected trash can be recycled by the local community and companies can also invest in the project to get certificates.
