Oceanic garbage patches are collections of marine debris that come together due to ocean currents; they have devastating effects on ocean ecosystems. Your challenge is to design a mission to help clean up garbage from the ocean!

Integrated Litter Patch Collector

Integrated Litter Patch Collector is aimed to recognize and clean the Litter Patches in the ocean. Using OSCAR's data to determine in which zones the litter accumulates and using an autonomous system we plan to recollect the litter.

Background

We build this integrated system in order to optimize the use of resources, the OSCAR's data will help to locate the litter, and the second part will help us to clean the litter. We selected this challenge because is a current problem that affects our world and is our duty to help!

What it does

The main part of the solution collects garbage from ocean surface and is guided using an estimate for the location of possible garbage patches, the data that is use for this is obtained from OSCAR satellite and is plotted in a Vector Map.

The main problems that our team had was to understand the data and how to use it, also we were looking for optimal ways to collect garbage from the ocean without disturbing sea life.

Future plans

  • The implementation of a sonar in the garbage collection device to avoid sea life, like whales getting too close and getting injured.
  • Patch marker, using neural networks or simulations we can locate and calculate accurately the location of the litter patches.
