The Challenge | Trash Cleanup

Oceanic garbage patches are collections of marine debris that come together due to ocean currents; they have devastating effects on ocean ecosystems. Your challenge is to design a mission to help clean up garbage from the ocean!

Plastic Barcode Tracking

Plastic tracking using barcode scanning helps us to make sure our produced plastic ends up in the right place for recycling, not in the oceans.

  • Background: Scanning the barcode printed on the plastic component makes us keep track of every stage the plastic encounters until it eventually ends for recycling. Implementing a fine system would make sure that every citizen obeys the laws and be careful not to litter and to dispose the plastic as quickly as possible.
  • Resources: Materials for the project: Barcode printing, bins with laser scanners, and database for recording scanned data. Proof of project possibility: Statistics showing the amount of plastic pollution in oceans as well as ones showing details regarding littering fine system in Singapore, which is the real-world example for the project.
  • Challenges faced: The project's main concern is the difficulty to implement in all countries in the world, especially at the same time. Not all countries have the same laws, budget, or concern for applying this kind of technology. However, the project can be managed through a global organization that can ease the process and make sure everything is going correctly and smoothly all over the world.
