Awards & Nominations

Neptune has received the following awards and nominations. Way to go!

Global Nominee

The Challenge | Trash Cleanup

Oceanic garbage patches are collections of marine debris that come together due to ocean currents; they have devastating effects on ocean ecosystems. Your challenge is to design a mission to help clean up garbage from the ocean!

This two-part solution is a combination of data and hardware, an application powered by crowdsourcing and NASA’s data to spot litter, and autonomous ROV's that will clean offshore.

The hardware will be a Drone mothership that navigates towards the litter spots provided by users and NASA's data to clean them up. This mothership deploys and guides four smaller garbage collector drones that approach the garbage to the ramp of the mothership, then the mothership compresses it to save space on board. The water drones will use solar energy to avoid fossil fuel and will be equipped with bathymetry instruments.

The app is free to download and use, it has a feature that lets users upload pictures and positions of the litter they find to help this project in its mission. The main idea of the app is to collect data from users and combines it with NASA's data to obtain a clear vision of the spots that have to be cleaned, and send the Water Drones there.

Furthermore with more data and an algorithm that can NASA's current, wind and waves data, we could event predict the position of the litter spots for a smarter mobilisation of the drone and/or for other potential cooperation willing to join this mission.
