Garbage in ocean is all those dirt and refuse that can be found in an ocean and will contaminate water and thereby makes life uncomfortable for human and aquatic. Some of this garbage is as follows: oil spillage, plastics, nylon etc. Because of this, we decided to find the method by which this can be taking care of so that both lives will be favorable to human being and the aquatic animals. With this, we think of the following ideas:
Whenever oil spillage is detected the agencies should do the following method in order to clean it up:
1. Bioremediation: Bioremediation is the use of micro-organism to remove harmful substances. These organisms can be bacteria, algae, fungi etc. That degrade petroleum products by metabolizing and breaking them into simpler and non-toxic molecules. Reagents and fertilizers may be added to the area. These phosphorus-based and nitrogen-based fertilizers provide adequate nutrients to the microbes so that they are able to grow and multiply quickly.
2. Natural Recovery: The simplest method of dealing with the oil spill cleanup operation is to make use of the vagaries of nature like the sun, the wind, the weather, tides, or naturally occurring microbes. It is used in certain cases when the shoreline is too remote or inaccessible, or the environmental impact of cleaning up a spill could potentially far outweigh the benefits.
3. Burning In-situ: In situ burning involves the controlled burning of oil that has spilled from a vessel or a facility, at the location of the spill. This can be done by ignited the oil floated on top of the water. So, this will help the oil to be burn off and reduce the adverse effect of the oil on the environment.
4. Using Oil booms: Equipment called containment booms acts like a fence to prevent the oil from further spreading or floating away. This oil boom has three parts: A ‘freeboard’ is the part that rises above the water surface, containing the oil and preventing it from splashing over the top. A ‘skirt’ is placed below the surface and keeps the oil from being squeezed under the booms and escaping a kind of cable or chain that connects the parts to strengthen and stabilize the boom. Connected sections of the boom are placed around the area of the oil spill until it is totally surrounded and contained.
5. Using Sorbent: Sorbents are materials that soak up liquids by either absorption (pulling in through pores) or adsorption (forming a layer on the surface). Both these properties make the process of clean-up much easier. Materials commonly used as oil sorbents are hay, peat moss, straw or vermiculite. With this method the oil can be recovered though they are most effective in small spills or to manage the leftover traces of a larger spill. Because after absorption the it becomes heavier thereby making it to sink and making it difficult to retrieve.
For other garbage we can use the following:
Sea bin: With this sea bin it can catch plastic bottles, papers that are floating on top of the water. This bin will be safe for aquatic animals because they don’t go close enough to the sea surface to be pulled in.
