The Challenge | Trash Cleanup

Oceanic garbage patches are collections of marine debris that come together due to ocean currents; they have devastating effects on ocean ecosystems. Your challenge is to design a mission to help clean up garbage from the ocean!

We all care about the oceans, and many of us are taking action to limit the amount of plastic that ends up there.

But very little attention has been taken to mitigate the plastic that's already there; and if we want to have any hope of finding and clearing it from the 71% (and growing) of the Earth's surface covered by water.

To date, there's no proven way of leveraging the volumes of NASA satellite data that is constantly imaging the world's oceans and using it to detect and predict the location of Trashbergs.

The Trashberg app collects Trashberg sightings from mobile phone users around the globe.

Our convolutional neural network will be trained over time; combining the NASA and user data to create increasingly accurate predictions of the location of Trashbergs.

We can't easily remove the Trashbergs that litter our oceans. But better understanding where they are can only make this task easier.
