Our team is building an App that gives historical overview of the land cover changes using the Landsat and Sentinel databases.

Present Product

Our product is based on free satellite images, which are classified and provided to users in a convenient way in order to see the changes in land cover.

It saves time for people who need to have an idea about land cover change over a certain period, so that they do not need to collect and classify images by themselves.

The images we used for our application were taken from NASA’s Landsat database; the processing and classification processes were done by using Google Earth Engine. Relevant statistics (economic, environmental, social and other statistical indicators) that influence land cover changes for the corresponding years are displayed from the Estonian Statistics Data portal.

At this time, our app covers only Estonia.

Future Plans

Expand the list of image databases to cover other free satellite imagery sources.

Perform tailor-made classifications for specific audience at their desired accuracy whiles maintaining a service for generic products (customise to users needs).

Incorporating the application with Google Cloud services and Google Earth Engine to allow users make wide range of choices in terms of desired timeframes.

The area available for detecting land cover changes should be expanded to other Baltic countries and the rest of Europe.
