The Challenge | 1UP for NASA Earth

Your challenge is to create a new video game that uses NASA Earth data, providing players a novel way to interact and have fun with NASA Earth data. What you create can inform, educate, inspire, or simply provide an enjoyable experience for players – the Earth is your stage!

Your Nation

Your Nation is a card game that aims to develop macroeconomic strategies. The game is oriented toward future-altering decision making, and some challenges come from NASA's historical catastrophe data.

This project was created against the 1UP For NASA Earth challenge. To meet the challenge of creating a game that uses NASA data in a fun and interactive application, we made a game that we named YOUR NATION. In this game we describe some situations that have occurred that could occur in the world and the player chooses which solution to take to get out of such situations, with or without consequences.
To elaborate the Game Card narrative we did a Brainstorm and finally decided to rehearse a post war scenario where chaos set in and there were many deaths. Devastated and haunted people needed a leader. After many meetings and reviews, the popular council chose a leader, the player.
The mechanics of the game mainly involve the leader's decisions and their consequences for the population and the world. Therefore, for decision-making the leader receives at his table challenges and events that are taking place in the world and that he needs to make decisions about it or just be aware of what happened.
To keep the balance of what is happening in your world there are icons with intensity bars for each area such as: population health, agriculture, industry, education, environment and your own money. From the decisions the leader makes, these bars get fuller less, according to each consequence. The goal of the game is to maintain the maximum balance between all areas for a good living of the population.
The game has several areas of knowledge instilled in itself. The economy is one of them, because in order to pass the level it is necessary to know how to dose investments, agreements and aid. This encourages people to always think about the consequences before making decisions. Also, many cards that are present in the games regarding disasters, natural phenomena were obtained by NASA data.
Talking about the game's schedule, we have certain points to consider. First of all we put together a list of cards with her narratives and their impacts on the game by noting the areas of affection, percentage over money or related areas. In terms of technology, the React and BabylonJS framework was used. JavaScript was used for game design as well as card draw logic.
All the cards were shuffled randomly, drawn by their previously divided areas. And then the card is revealed to the player.
