The Challenge | 1UP for NASA Earth

Your challenge is to create a new video game that uses NASA Earth data, providing players a novel way to interact and have fun with NASA Earth data. What you create can inform, educate, inspire, or simply provide an enjoyable experience for players – the Earth is your stage!

Hypernova Studios

The video game industry has grown exponentially over time and yet there is a severe lack of truly entertaining and educational products. Here at Hypernova Studios our passion is integrating science and gaming through cohesion, vision, and initiative.NASA’s 1Up for Earth challenge provided the perfect opportunity to use copious amounts of freely provided NASA data to educate the ever-growing gaming community, a community that is the next generation of do-ers.Our solution: PopkartePopkarte is an electronic card game that aims to give players a better comprehension of population density. On the surface, Popkarte is an incredibly fun web app built in Unity about choosing the right card to play at the right moment, hoping your opponent doesn’t have a higher value card. The cards feature NASA satellite imagery of the location they represent and NASA Population Density data that determines the value or strength of the card. Popkarte is about teaching and building an understanding of various popular and obscure locations on earth. Our project changes how people ultimately view the Earth and its locations and peoples. The next phase in our project is implementing multiplayer aspects and deckbuilding. Deckbuilding would encourage exploration of the world around us to obtain various location based cards via GPS locational services.Farther in the future more NASA data sets can be added to make the game more broad in educational subjects and even more competitive through unique card interactions.
