The Challenge | 1UP for NASA Earth

Your challenge is to create a new video game that uses NASA Earth data, providing players a novel way to interact and have fun with NASA Earth data. What you create can inform, educate, inspire, or simply provide an enjoyable experience for players – the Earth is your stage!

The Scrap Space

Our project consists of a virtual videogame to raise public awareness about the dangers and the amount of space junk

Challenge: Nasa Earth

Problem: Space debris has become a growing concern in recent years, since collisions at orbital speeds can be highly detrimental to the satellites' operations and can also produce even more space debris in a process called Syndrome of Kessler.

WHAT IS "THE SCRAP SPACE"?

The Scrap Space is a virtual video game in which one collects the scrap found in the space, with the intervention of 2 players, through a ship that expels a clamp and / or a laser to the outside. The clamp collects that waste, attracts it, transforms it into cubes and stores it in the ship, whereas the laser destroys it quickly. An informational message will appear every two cubes and 5 points will be obtained. The player who gets the most points is the winner and if any of the players collides with a piece of scrap, he loses and starts the game again.

The game begins by asking the players a question: "Did you know that there are 35 million pieces of scrap metal in space? Would you help us collect some?" You will transport them to a map of space, divided into six parts where you can choose your starting place. These parts contain 5 levels of increasing difficulty: while the players have less and less time, the scrap metal moves faster. In addition, the space will appear as realistic as possible.

SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM

The solution is to make people aware of scrap in space through the video game, using a virtual lens with a mobile phone where they will have a real view.

The space cabin

The space cabin is another way of playing "The Screap Space" which consists of, a dark cabin where they will have a screen playing the video game. Players will use controls and space helmets where the most realistic sound possible of the video game will be reproduced.
