The Challenge | 1UP for NASA Earth

Your challenge is to create a new video game that uses NASA Earth data, providing players a novel way to interact and have fun with NASA Earth data. What you create can inform, educate, inspire, or simply provide an enjoyable experience for players – the Earth is your stage!

Adventure with Captain M

Adventure with Captain M is a video game that educates kids, on the consequences of actions by human beings on Earth and the other lifeforms on it, through a fun and interactive way.

OUR Earth
  • Background:
    • Our team believes that there is a need to deliver educational messages about global warming in an innovative and interesting manner and this should start from young. As such, we decided to work on this project which aims to educate kids (aged 12 and under) about the impacts of human actions on global warming through the form of a game.
  • What it does:
    • An educational game that allows the players to embark on an adventure and learn about global warming concepts through his/her interaction with the game
    • Besides learning about global warming concepts, we also aim to inform the consequences of human beings' actions on other lifeforms
  • NASA Resources used:
    • We will be utilizing the NASA resources in our quiz and puzzles in part 1 of our game for players to obtain the required item in order to proceed on to the next stage
  • Future Plans:
    • Expand on the idea of exploration to allow players to embark on an adventure to different geographical locations on earth in the form of a virtual tour on a 3 dimensional globe
  • Built With:
    • Unreal for tilemap creation
    • Javascript for mini games
    • Python for mini games

How to play:

There are 2 parts to this game. Part 1 of the game is to get from home to the Amazon Rainforest. Players will embark on a journey that consists of 15 stages of different scenarios whereby they are required to make a decision given 2 choices.

Upon reaching the Amazon Rainforest successfully, players will embark on part 2 of the game. Their mission is to help a resident bird of the Amazon Rainforest, 'Flappie' to return home.

Example:

What a way to start your adventure…

There are some huge trees in your pathway, preventing you from advancing. What are you going to do?

A. Chop off the trees

B. Solve this puzzle to get the help of a forest ranger!

When Option A is chosen, player continues their journey. However, this choice is recorded as a harmful act to the environment.

When Option B is chose, player will be prompted to complete a memory game in order to move on to the next stage.

As the player moves on through the 15 stages, their choices are being recorded. Upon completion of part 1 of the game, players will move on to part 2, whereby they will help 'Flappie' to go back to the rainforest. At this point, the player will be controlling 'Flappie' as she tries to fly home. However, there is an issue here. Due to the 'negative' decisions that were made previously by the human character in part 1, the player will realize that there are now very few tress left in the rainforest and the journey for 'Flappie' to go home will be more difficult as there are less trees for 'Flappie' to rest on after flapping for a distance.

Through this process, we hope to make people realize how their actions (in terms of decisions) will affect other lifeforms on Earth and how they negatively impact the life of these animals.

The mini-games throughout the game makes use of NASA resources to make people more aware of the various environmental impacts and the changes that we do not realize on our planet Earth.
