The Challenge | To Bloom or Not to Bloom

Your challenge is to solve the mystery behind algal blooms! What factors cause blooms in some water bodies but not others, and how can we better predict their occurrence to prevent harm to aquatic and human life?

Algae Research

Documentation and programming of an interactive virtual map to know the location of the growth of the algae and the causes of it.

Problem

Algae are diverse and photosynthetic organisms that occur naturally in marine and freshwater systems. They are vital for many ecosystems, support aquatic food chains and affect air quality

Seaweeds around the world are related depending on the area they are located, for example, in the warm zone algae are generated more with this type of climate which is located in the circumference of the center of the earth, where can be found the largest amount of forests.

So what does this have to do with the jungles? In the month of July 2019 it was announced that it was the warmest month in history and that at the same time the Great Sargasso Atlantic Belt appeared. These seized the nutrients of the Amazon and invaded from the west coast of Africa to the Gulf of Mexico which caused large amounts of oxygen shortage on the beaches, bad smell and the block of sunlight, being the oceans covered by algae, not You can do the process of oxytobacteria, which is what cause the process of photosynthesis.

Like the chlorophyll of the sea was compared with the increase of algae, then the point that is being given is the comparison to find the highest amount of algae concentration with these data:

  • - Wind and water currents.
  • - Presence of nutrients (such as phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon)
  • - Water temperatures warmer than usual
  • - Extreme events, such as floods, hurricanes and droughts.
  • - Slow water circulation
  • The list is exhaustive, so the mystery of the cause of algal blooms remains unresolved and for this the following was done:

    Project

The project was focused and a visualization was made in JavaScript language that shows in the different parts of the world the concentration of algae, likewise, where each one of them is located.

The data were collected in the links provided by the challenge that were: Ocean Colors, Worldwind, Data from all of the above missions can be found on NASA Earth Data, LandSat, among others.

Like not to stay there, the information was compared with other data sources and confirmed if the work was correct.

In this visualization it is easy to interact with the 3D map and know the diversity of the increase of them.

But it is also known that algae are not something that harms the oceans, if not, that the increase in them is harmful.

    Purpose and Solution

But, what is the purpose of this project?

People can collaborate and focus on those areas that are most needed, as already stated above, in the warm zone of the planet and how to prevent the problems that they may give, in which times of the year the increase in them is seen and How to clean the area better. For this it is the virtual map, the tool is being given to make known all those problematic ones.
