SafeRoad delivers information for drivers to avoid environmental hazards on the road.

Background:

Every day, thousands of vehicles are disrupted by landslides and other environmental hazards.

However, this could be avoided by the integration of NASA satellite data, Landslide Hazard Assessment for Situational Awareness, and local mappings.

Focusing on Brazil, we have a proactive solution informing drivers of potential hazards on the roads.

Using vehicle to vehicle communications and LTE infrastructure, we deliver predictions to the vehicles informing of potential hazards.

This is even more important with the advances of autonomous vehicles.

Our solution is based on the OSI layers and address the major concerns related to vehicular communication.

1. We developed an API to connect the NASA Global Flood Monitoring System with Brazilian National Institute for Space Research and the Brazilian Federal Emergency Management Agencydata.
2. We used OpenStreetMap as a platform to display our API information and displays the road grid.
3. We connected with Bosch (a major vendors of V2V communication) to assist with the Network layer of the solution. Their product enables our API to send and receive data from our end users.
4. We developed an intuitive UI design for easiness of use. The idea (not developed yet) is for the user to be alerted in their favorite GPS Maps App.

Challanges:

1. Develop the initial idea.
2. Understand the data.
3. Integrate the data from different sources and formats. This took a great chunk of our time.
