Rise for Resilience- TEAM DATA FOR GOOD
Data is our savior! Data leads straight to social impact! Data crowds all the human dimensions! Data squashes innovation! Data is plural ! Data is Singular.
Data is for good and that’s our team.
We are a team of graduate students at the University of Washington , comprising of a team of data scientists and UX designers.
OUR CHALLENGE ?
We will be working on the challenge “Rise to Resilience” .
We are the newly appointed regional green engineers .We performed a comprehensive analysis and visualization of NASA and external data. We developed specific test cases by working on county wise data and our analysis is on King county. We measured the counterfactual and on comparing we observed that the current situation is bad and its only getting worse in the future. We as citizens know that we have to do something but none of us know how? So our solution aims o empower citizens at the local level to actually take actions and be held accountable and hence we came up with the solution which is local but has a potential to scale up to global level.
We tried to leverage a first of its kind, data driven approach to achieve green infrastructure impacts! Based on current and historical data , we try to mitigate the current environmental impact by allotting tasks to individuals! Our end users are socially responsible individuals who would come together and contribute which would aggregate and provide a bigger impact. A problem so big and complex that it just can’t be solved by a small community
So ,why not create a platform where we all come together and save our environment ?
Our solution starts with awareness!
We as regional green engineers performed comprehensive data analysis using NASA data and external data and observed that the results were quite concerning.
A graph which represents the average temp data vs years for King County shows a steep increase after the year 2005.The next graph represents an average precipitation data over the years for King County , which again reflects disturbing results.
In such a scenario, we aim at proposing tasks to these particular counties in such a way that aligns to the region’s current environmental concern. For example, if our concern is towards air quality , then tasks are aligned to solving the air quality and improving the index.
Air quality include : Carbon footprints, carpooling , use public transport ,call a chimney sweep
Water: Limit your water consumption per person , (per person measurement has to be done) , use a recyclable or compostable barrel for rainwater harvest
Plant native and drought tolerant plant species
Garbage : keep track of your trash and segregate trash. Reduce number of plastic food packaging.
Scores are given to individuals based on the tasks they performed and then the green engineer gets to evaluate who are those socially responsible citizens who performed their tasks religiously .
With all that has been mentioned above, our application has been able to hit 3 major UN goals:
Also to remember that , this application is transparent and can be used by both green engineers and users.
