The Challenge | From Curious Minds Come Helping Hands

Your challenge is to design and build an innovative platform to integrate satellite data and information about vulnerable populations and environmental hazards in order to identify the most at-risk populations. Be creative and think outside the box. How will you identify those people that are often missed, but need aid the most?

Hazard checker platform for travelers

Problem

There are no web services provided information about the potential risk level of natural and environmental hazards for travelers worldwide. So travelers can’t choose the safest time and destination for their trip. At the same time, travelers are vulnerable because of a lack of access to local news and infrastructure, as well as insufficient preparation for specific hazards in comparison with locals.

Solution

We develop a hazard checker platform where travelers can check the risk level of all potential natural and environmental hazards before planning their trip.

How it works

Platform users can choose the needed destination and watch the information about risks of 10 potential natural and environmental hazards (hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, eruptions, droughts, landslides, wildfires, air pollution PM2,5, air pollution NO2, air pollution CO). Each destination contains risk level and risk period of all hazards, so travelers can plan the best time and destination for the trip.

Technology

In the center of technology stands our data analysis system. We predict risk levels of natural and environmental hazards using more than 30 data sources. Our predicting model is based on the historical satellite data, in-situ data and weather forecast. Our long-term forecast is involved in periodically repetitive events. We determine the frequency and localization of hazardous events and extrapolate it for future time (with a month time scale).
