The Challenge | From Curious Minds Come Helping Hands

Your challenge is to design and build an innovative platform to integrate satellite data and information about vulnerable populations and environmental hazards in order to identify the most at-risk populations. Be creative and think outside the box. How will you identify those people that are often missed, but need aid the most?

EXTREME TEMPERATURE FORECAST

EXTREME TEMPERATURE FORECAST

Problems.

Climate change that affects agriculture in different ways, through changes in average temperature, rainfall, and extreme climates (such as heat waves); For example, in the last 12 years there have been strong temperature changes in Colombia (minimum temperature record February, 2007), which have affected producers in the agricultural sector, devastating crops due to a phenomenon called frost.

Climate change is currently affecting agriculture, unevenly throughout the world. In the future, climate change is expected to adversely affect crops in low-altitude countries. Climate change will increase the risk of food security for vulnerable populations.

In turn, it has been seen that agriculture can also produce significant effects on the climate, mainly due to the production and release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitric oxide; by the alteration of the surface of the planet, which loses its capacity to absorb or reflect heat and light, as well as by the radiative forcing. Deforestation and desertification, in addition to fossil fuels, are the largest anthropic sources of carbon dioxide. Agriculture itself is the main contributor in increasing the concentrations of methane and nitric oxide in the planet's atmosphere.

Researchers at the Overseas Development Institute have studied the potential impacts that climate change could have on agriculture and how this would affect the fight against poverty in developed countries. They argued that the effects of moderate climate change will be diverse in those countries. However, the vulnerability of the poor in developed countries to the short-term effects of climate change, mainly the increase in the frequency and severity of adverse climates will likely have a negative impact. According to them, this should be taken into account in agricultural policies.

Solution

Design a system for detecting weather anomalies that facilitates the vulnerable peasant population to anticipate possible drastic changes in temperature to avoid crop losses and therefore economic losses, for this we will use certain technological tools for communication such as the internet and also radio, since the vast majority do not have current means of communication for low resources or for living in remote areas.

This anomaly detection system obtains the climatic data from a data source called WINDY and NASA's anomaly software tools, which are analyzed and interpreted by EXTREME TEMPERATURE FORECAST which warns the specific climatic anomaly to the receivers in public entities such as mayorships or other government entities, through light and sound symbols, which make this alert more understandable. With this information, the government entities will be responsible for giving notice to the populations of their municipality through radio or other communication accessible to the entire population.

The alert form in the mayor's office or another government entity is through a receiver that gives the light and sound signal of the temperature forecast that will happen in the future, this message will be more understandable in the mobile application of EXTREME TEMPERATURE FORECAST where send dates and forecast data.

With this solution, contingency plans can be made in time to mitigate the impact of extreme climates on the crops of people who do not have access to valuable climate information because they are poor or live in a remote area.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE: Technological inclusion.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

Mitigate and, if possible, prevent the negative effects of climate change on crops, with true information provided by the application.

Improve agricultural production, enabling climate data that can facilitate the idealization of contingency plans

Avoid economic losses due to the loss of large crops due to the climatic state.

HOW WILL IT BE ACHIEVED?

In summary, it is desired to create an application capable of receiving meteorological data from an institution that generates and produces reliable information, said information or data will be read and then interpreted by the application through certain conditions, to subsequently through a device bring to reality a Easy to understand alert signal, which indicates the possible type of weather phenomenon that is approaching.

The previous plan will be executed as follows:

1) DATA COLLECTION

The data will be obtained from the numerical models of GFS ECMWD weather forecast (integrated in windy). Forestry and frost prediction models will be used, taking into account anomalies in temperature, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure and degree of humidity among other variables

3) APPLICATION

This application contains the data provided by websites of weather stations and an interpretation system that allows the user to know the forecast of frost or drought.

THE CENTRAL TEAM.

The central team receives and issues information on the meteorological changes that can cause extreme climates.

4) TRANSMIT THE INFORMATION

AWAY AREAS (RADIO WAVES, RECEIVING DEVICE)

GOVERNMENT STATE (THROUGH INTERNET, RECEIVING DEVICE)

TO FUTURE

Our goal is to install stations that provide timely forecasts of possible extreme temperature changes to the most vulnerable populations in order to avoid economic losses in this sector.

The station consists of a meteorological information receiving device that would be installed in each home.
