The Challenge | Rise to Resilience!

You are a newly appointed Regional Green Engineer. Your challenge is to develop green infrastructure solutions for complex challenges in water management and risk reduction.Create a tool to assess the characteristics of an urban or rural area of your choice, and integrate green infrastructures, or nature-based solutions, into that region’s development plans to1) reduce flood and/or drought risk2) establish sustainable land use practices3) support water management, and/or 4) produce local economic opportunities.

Reviva Urbano will provide an application that will fail selective collection by providing collectors to collect users' garbage. Providing a collective awareness of the environmental issue.

THE PROBLEM

The Abrelpe survey shows that from 2016 to 2017, the inappropriate dumping ofgarbage in Brazil increased by 3%. Each Brazilian generated 378 kilos of waste in ayear, a volume that would cover a field and a half of football. Brazil is still far behindin recycling, it is the 4th largest producer of plastic waste in the world, it produces11,355,220 million tons of plastic waste per year and only 1.2% is recycled, or145,043 tons.

Along with this increase in produced waste, so has the amount of waste that will endup in dumps, with negative impacts on the environment and public health. Studiesstate that the country spends $ 3 billion per year on health care for people whobecame ill because of contamination caused by dumps.

“The impacts of dumps, which contaminate the water and the soil and pollute the air,directly affect the health of 95 million people, whether they live in the vicinity of thesedumps, or those who consume either water or foods produced in these areas thatare contaminated, bringing a series of health problems ”, says Carlos Silva Filho,CEO of Abrelpe.

“Almost half of the 5,570 Brazilian cities currently do not have an integrated plan forwaste management, according to the Profile of Brazilian Municipalities, released byIBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) in July 2018.”

The user will have access to notifications about the functionality of the application ingeneral, and transaction logging via blockchain.

On the side menu there will be availability to access the virtual store, collection daysand tab for the user to contribute to the NGO.

Organic food will be available for purchase by the general public.CollectThe dates to be collected and the points to be collected will be informed.

On this tab users will be able to donate through credit / debit card and slips.

HOW WILL THE APPLICATION WORK?
The app will provide two interfaces for two types of users, the average person whowould like to actively participate in improving the final waste destination that woulduse the app to find organic and recyclable waste collection points where the othertype of user would enter. In action, the collectors, these users would go to thecollection points and use the app to identify the people who would be disposing oftheir garbage, the collector will collect the garbage from the person, and uponidentifying it by the ID number in the app, would register the weight of garbagecollected and will be converted into virtual coins used in the application itself forpurchases of food produced in the collective garden, which will use Nasa WorldViewthat will assist in climate assessment to know the best time for planting andharvesting, as well as purchases of products made with the recyclable waste.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

In addition to the application, a movement would be made in communities of largeurban centers with the aim of educating people about the importance of disposing ofwaste correctly, it would show the impacts that irresponsible disposal causes on theenvironment, we will also teach how we can produce food organic waste intocollective gardens, turning the organic waste into compost for the garden itselfthrough composting and the recyclable waste could be sold or used for makingproducts. We will seek people from the community to work in the communitygardens, thus having an impact on the local economy, providing a source of incomefor community residents, moving the economy.

MONETIZATION

The source of income would be through in-app advertising, user signatures, who inreturn would receive kits with organic food produced in community gardens, in-appsales of food produced and products made from recycled waste, and compostproduced by composting.

COSTS

We will have costs with:

● Application maintenance;

● Community gardens;

● Bike tricycle for collection;

● Collector kit (mobile and PPE)

● Collection container;

● Educational events / educational materials

● Publicity.
