The Challenge | Rise to Resilience!

You are a newly appointed Regional Green Engineer. Your challenge is to develop green infrastructure solutions for complex challenges in water management and risk reduction.Create a tool to assess the characteristics of an urban or rural area of your choice, and integrate green infrastructures, or nature-based solutions, into that region’s development plans to1) reduce flood and/or drought risk2) establish sustainable land use practices3) support water management, and/or 4) produce local economic opportunities.

Autonomous city in the desert

Present floods as a managed natural disaster and ensure proper distribution and management in the desert of water resources. We need to terraforming deserts reducing population density in megacities

Autonomous desert city

1) Electricity

Residential complex

Methods of development:

The minimum required amount of energy is 150,000,000 kWh per month

a) Solar panels 213 840 kWh; 25 000 USD

b) Wind generators 60 000 W * h; 70 800 USD

2) Food and water

Food production

Since sand in the desert is mainly sandstone or sandy non-combustible soils, our team decided to grow plants without using soil - that is, using the hydroponic method.

Water production

Devices, and their 500,000 installed in poles 10.5 meters high, produce 3,000,000 liters per day based on titanium dioxide. Therefore, with a maximum population, water will be sufficient both for human life and for watering plants. And since the cost of the device is small, if necessary, they can be purchased. Also used water will be recycled.

The cost of one device is less than three dollars.

3-4) Local resources and economics

Glass factory

Solar Plant

Quartz Slab Factory

5) Construction

The dome consists of three-layer glass panels with an iron frame. Assembly is carried out in parts.
