The Challenge | Rise to Resilience!

You are a newly appointed Regional Green Engineer. Your challenge is to develop green infrastructure solutions for complex challenges in water management and risk reduction.Create a tool to assess the characteristics of an urban or rural area of your choice, and integrate green infrastructures, or nature-based solutions, into that region’s development plans to1) reduce flood and/or drought risk2) establish sustainable land use practices3) support water management, and/or 4) produce local economic opportunities.

POTABLE WATER CONSERVATION: awareness begins within our houses (or in their rooftop!)

The "STARTWATER" team is concerned about the water crisis. We believe that awareness should start within our homes. The project aims to create an application to assist in the construction of rainwater capture systems on the rooftop of houses.

STARTWATER

The team consists of engineers with experience in agronomy and climatology, civil engineering, economist and system developer.

A viable alternative to reduce water scarcity is to capture and store rainwater, which has been happening for years in some countries. However, sizing rainwater storage reservoirs is one of the most expensive items in the system deployment. There are some mathematical methods that can be used to size rainwater reservoirs. These methods are subject to NBR 15.527 (ABNT, 2007). However, these methods tend to oversize the reservoir, making the expenditures invested higher; or undersize the size of reservoirs making water saving not as efficient. This is because these methods use in their calculations little consistent, incomplete precipitation data, usually coming from few meteorological stations, not covering all municipalities.

Daily rainfall data from any region of the world can be purchased through the NASA Power platform to solve this problem, or the STARTWATER APP provides access to this rainfall data from any city in the world and the most appropriate reservoir size or volume according to your needs. your needs. with the rainfall regime for your locality. In addition, STARTWATER APP can provide and replicate water savings from month to month if you decide to deploy the catchment system, as well as manage and monitor water usage.

#HOW THE APP WORKS#

Inputs:

- Location (based on more than 50-year historical series databases of water precipitation, data collected from NASA Power platforms). The databases are used to train a deep-learning algorithm to predict the precipitation for a given month considering the location indicated by the user or captured by the app.

- Rooftop width and length (used to calculate rooftop area and calculate the volume of water collected by roofs).

- How many people there are in the family (used to calculate water consumption in the building).

Note: The STARTWATER APP provides an announcement about using rainwater only for non-potable fins.

Outputs:

- Reservoir volume (based on inputs and adaptation of sizing methods)

- Annual potable water savings

- Monthly savings graphs (will still be entered)

- Water costs without the system

- Water expenses with the system

- Economy in a year

In future upgrades, the STARTWATER APP will assist you or the user in the complete design of a rainwater catchment system, ranging from pipeline sizing to reservoir sizing, along with economic statistics.

This version of STARTWATER APP focused on the most expensive step (reservoir sizing) and NASA data mining.
