The Challenge | Set Your Sights High!

NASA builds and operates numerous satellite and airborne missions that deliver critical measurements and data to the world’s science community. Your challenge is to develop a tool that enables people to identify NASA satellites and satellite instruments as they fly over their locations on Earth. Help people explore the data and applications coming from the instruments overhead!

Satellite Scouter

Catch NASA satellites, learn about them and show them to your friends! Satellite Scouter is a game that encourages young minds to learn more about NASA satellites and the information they collect.

AD CAELUM

1. MOTIVATION

Science can be overwhelming, and it isn't always sexy. It can be difficult to get into, without an already vested interest or purpose. Our eyes in the sky are imperative to the advancement of the human race. So how do we make people care more about them?

  • Why build this app for our target and for NASA?
  • Target users: Young people, school students
  • Impact: To have fun, share and compare satellite details with their friends.

2. OBJECTIVE

  • What did we aim to achieve?
  • A fun, discovery experience for young people to learn about NASA satellites and the information they capture.
  • A social element for users to feel their learning about satellites is part of a global community.

3. DESCRIPTION

  • Github
  • UI
  • Backend services
  • Data processing

4. DETAILS

  • Gamification
  • We care more about things when we're able to interact and play with them. Interaction is also one of the best methods of learning.
  • In game, there is a social system driven by having tradeables and leaderboards. The reward system is in place to that the player has something to show for her efforts in game. He or she will earn parts to build satellites for their collection, deck out with various accessories, and be able to flex their achievements and collections with their friends.
  • Satellite hunting on Google Map Interface
  • Hunting a satellite involves answering a quiz

5. USE OF DATA

  • Data Sources
  • List of NASA Earth Science Satellites
  • NASA TLE API
  • NASA 3D Models
  • N2YO What's up satellites above
  • UCS Satellite Database
  • Data Processing
  • What's above us [our /above endpoint]: N2YO What's up > filter by NASA Earth Science satellites list > NASA TLE API + UCS data
  • Calculation of Satellite Orbits: our /above endpoint + orbit.js by parsing the TLE of the relevant satellites
  • Adjustment for Satellite Global Positions

6. CONCLUSION / ROADMAP

  • Hunting satellites against a star chart of the night sky
  • Take a selfie with the stars
  • Constellations
  • Comet tracking
  • Star gazing
  • Special events:
  • Satellite re-entry
  • Rocket launches
  • New mini-games and mechanisms to master
