The Challenge | Set Your Sights High!

NASA builds and operates numerous satellite and airborne missions that deliver critical measurements and data to the world’s science community. Your challenge is to develop a tool that enables people to identify NASA satellites and satellite instruments as they fly over their locations on Earth. Help people explore the data and applications coming from the instruments overhead!

ORBITAR

ORBITAR is an augmentative reality platform for interactive learning about space objects.

HAL 9001

Our passion for making knowledge available to everyone through playful learning environments has made us choose the "Set Your Sights High!" Challenge.

ORBITAR is a platform of augmentative reality that provides an interactive learning environment where the users learn the importance of the satellites in their life, bringing awareness and curiosity about science.

Our code is available in three repositories:

https://github.com/Novatics/novaOnRails-

https://github.com/Novatics/nasa

https://github.com/Novatics/nasaDataAPI

The nasa module is our mobile application. It is built with Flutter and ARCore. It runs on Android and iOS devices.

The novaOnRails provides the API consumed by the mobile application. It is where the users' information is stored and retrieved.

The nasaDataAPI is our module responsible for connecting, extract, transform and load the data to be consumed by the nasa module, and also calculates the object coordinates based on the observer’s look. Is was built using django, django-rest, pyOrbital, and pandas.

We used the 3D models of the satellites available on https://data.nasa.gov/ to show in the augmentative reality environment.

Our next steps are:

  • Improve the AR experience, creating more animations and interactions in the AR environment
  • Include more satellite data and create a curated list of important and relevant satellites to use in our platform
  • Implement the integration with VR gadgets
  • Add other types of astronomical objects such as stars and planets
