Global Nominee

The Challenge | Set Your Sights High!

NASA builds and operates numerous satellite and airborne missions that deliver critical measurements and data to the world’s science community. Your challenge is to develop a tool that enables people to identify NASA satellites and satellite instruments as they fly over their locations on Earth. Help people explore the data and applications coming from the instruments overhead!

Rainbow Sat AR is a new, more relatable way of experiencing NASA Satellites

Rainbow Six

We created an AR Application that displays the real time position of selected NASA Earth Observation Satellites around an AR Globe.

NASA resources we used were among others the 3D Object models for NASA Hardware provided under https://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/models, the globe we display uses NASA imaginery of the earth (https://wvs.earthdata.nasa.gov/) as a texture. Other resources used were Swift for iOS App development, Node.js to create an API for serving Satellite Positions in realtime and satellite-js library to propagate TLE Data into satellite position.

The Satellites have distinct personalities based on their real-life-goals and are able to have a conversation with the user. The characters of the satellites are especially based on the impact of the data collected by them. To illustrate this concept and the user interaction we used Sketch and InVision.

You can find the open source repositories over at https://github.com/rainbow-6, an interactive prototype of the app concept here https://invis.io/SWUGJ5PBJT5, and the presentation video here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/z9cl9z7a92h1klp/rainbow6...
