Vigías de la Tierra has received the following awards and nominations. Way to go!

Global Nominee

The Challenge | Set Your Sights High!

NASA builds and operates numerous satellite and airborne missions that deliver critical measurements and data to the world’s science community. Your challenge is to develop a tool that enables people to identify NASA satellites and satellite instruments as they fly over their locations on Earth. Help people explore the data and applications coming from the instruments overhead!

VISION

VISION is a social network that seeks to connect enthusiasts and science experts showing them interesting information about NASA satellites and their instruments, the information they collect and polemic topics that are happening at that time in the world.

Vigías de la Tierra

What is VISION?

VISION is a social network in which both scientists and science enthusiasts can register. We know that NASA has several satellites and other types of objects that orbit the earth making measurements daily, the theme of our application is that each of these objects has a profile within the application and every time one of these objects passes near the user, the application will notify you of its proximity and allow you to access in real time to the information that this satellite is measuring or the study that is being carried out, as well as the possibility to learn about the satellite and its instrumentation.

VISION will consist of the basic and necessary structures of an application that manages users and also the following main sections: News Section, Discussion Forum, Questions and Answers Section.

The News Feed will include user-relevant articles, which may consist of engaging information such as data that a nearby satellite is currently broadcasting, high-value news (such as some hurricane or earthquake that some satellite is investigating), articles that have been written from some certified scientist, etc.

The social network part begins when the user gives "Follow" to a scientist who makes articles attractive to him, or to the profile of a satellite because he likes the kind of investigation this satellite does. This will help him not to lose contact with its favorite scientists and satellites, and therefore its favorite kind of science information.

Discussion forum, after the user open any news of their interest it would be sent to another page where the news spreads and a discussion forum about this specific news opens.

On the other hand, VISION will work with a reward's system based on scores to users, this score will be measured through the Q&A section. In this section users can ask general questions and with the possibility that other users answer you, in turn the same users will rate the questions and answers. The user earns more points the more relevant questions they have and the more accurate answers they type. This reward system would be made with the aim of having users with higher taps from time to time be given some kind of prize. This will encourage the users to be proactive on VISION.

Points to consider about VISION

  • VISION solves the problem proposed in the challenge because it allows the user to interact pleasantly with the satellites that are close to him or have given them "Follow" so that he can learn about the satellites, their instrumentation and the type of information it collects or the research it does.
  • VISION creates a community of people made up of enthusiastic science people and expert scientist in which you as user constantly learn and anyone can enter and register. This causes a massive disclosure of scientific information.
  • VISION can be a reference for the search for scientific information in which you have the possibility to be virtually close to scientists and experts in diverse areas of human knowledge.
  • VISION through its broad media impact can raise awareness ofcontroversial issues relating to Earth and our environment. An example could be a mass notification to all users of something that strongly affects the planet, such as a massive fire or awareness of global warming and sea level rise, among many others.
  • It is important to say that the app works as a network backed down by the same users and with the certainty of truthful information coming directly from NASA.

Others

An app demo has already been developed in Ionic using the Firebase platform.

This is an unfinished prototype, is adapted to be better viewed on mobile devices and includes the login sections, active satellites and information of each satellite.
