The Challenge | Smash your SDGs!

Your challenge is to develop creative solutions that use Earth observations to address the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and foster sustainable development worldwide. Use NASA and other Earth observing satellites’ data as well as information generated by crowd-sourcing and in-situ measurements to create practical applications that support environmental and societal policy across water, health, food security and/or land use domains.

Cidados

Cidados is an app that involves High School students and scouts to collect data from their cities and impact public spaces that would otherwise be left alone and unused. We triangulate NASA's Earth Data maps and the assessed data through our app.

Cidados

Background

Cidados, in portuguese, is a merge between Cities and data. This is our idea, to teach high school teens and scouts about the Cities subject (according to the SDG 11) one of the functions of the app. Once the students/scouts learn about how the city works and what's important for it, he/she can collect information about public spaces, evaluate these, take pictures and give grades with our questionnaire. For instance, a park that has poor infrastructure will have low grades and should be a target of two possible actions. One of those is a group for fixing and rebuilding that can be gathered through other app functionality and the other is to local businesses owners to invest money on solving the problems of public spaces and in exchange they can display their brand on our app, display themselves at the places they fix and also they receive the Seal of City Embassador.

Resources

As resources we used pens and paper to brainstorm, then softwares like Ilustrator and microsoft windows powerpoint to produce and organize ou apps screens. Also, we used python to assess data from the Earth Data platform to collect informations about urban areas versus green areas, etc.

Challenges faced

Our challenges were severall, but specially to solve a complex problem such as the ecosystem of cities. We knew more than one strategy would be required and that's why we choose to employ education to mold the minds of the youngs, questionnaires to asses how the spaces are today, a tool to mobilize people on great cleansing and rebuilding initiatives and a special map (build with NASA Eath Data) with all the public places, each with its own grade and detailed evaluation.

Our next challenge is to associate our gathered information of the app with the data of temperatures, rains, green areas percentage as well as urban areas. Hence, our objective is clearly to obtain enough knowledge about the cities in order to divise new policies and solve old problems.
