The Challenge | Spot That Fire V2.0

Your challenge is to create an application that leverages NASA's near-real-time and archival wildfire datasets along with other tools to support firefighting and fire mitigation efforts. This challenge builds on last year’s challenge of the same name by calling for innovative ideas and apps that focus on how to engage and enable citizens to assist with the entire firefighting and fire mitigation process.

Fire Purifier

Our project is designed to help early detection of fires, provides easier communication with fire stations, it tracks fires and notifies people about fire nearby, predicts the fire spreading by using AI and enables volunteering and donations, as well.

Our team "193" is consisted of young students aiming to stop the fires from spreading, by making an application. Together we are working on the challenge Spot that fire. Wildfires have started occurring more and more in the Balkan region. Many of us do not know the seriousness and the consequences of the fire;

  • Fire can destroy a huge number of living creatures (plants, animals) and destroy the biodiversity
  • It causes deforestation
  • It changes the land on which plants grow, causing erosion and floods if there is a rain afterward
  • Besides all of this, fire pollutes the air we are breathing.

Media does not have coverage on all of them. This results in people not being yet aware of the positive influence they can have in fighting this problem. The main goal of our application is to include the people from all societies in informing everyone about a fire, that is near them and a firefighting group that will extinguish it. We used the fact that everyone always has a phone in their pocket and created an Android application "Fire purifier". It consists of a few parts:

  • Home page including "REPORT FIRE" button (lets you report fires in real time): If you notice a fire you can report it in a matter of seconds. This way people will be more cautious and more involved in the helping process. We are looking forward to a less number of fires as well as a faster way of stopping them from making even worse situations.;When reporting photos should be published and there will be place for writing a comment, but that will not be obligatory.
  • Fire map (shows you fires in the nearby area): By using user generated data and data provided by NASA's satellites, our application can represent all of the fires that are close to you. On fire map help centers will be also shown.
  • Help board (informs about volunteering actions and charity events and lets a person join on the spot): Our application allows people to learn how can they help during a case of emergency, in this case fires. People that want to be volunteers can help the environment by acting fast when a fire is reported by many users. If we need any volunteers for a fire that is near them, they will receive a message from us, that will include where exactly is the fire and what should they do to help us improve the destroyed places, forests, homes. Everyone can become a volunteer if they want to. The only thing one should do to start being a volunteer is to inform us about that by sending us an email.
  • Instructions and tutorials: This part helps you find our application useful and helpful, as well. This project's target group is the general population. That is why it is free and easy to use.
  • Fundraising: Everyone will always be able to donate money. In emergency cases, we will make it possible to donate food and clothes. After each donation we will make report, so you will know where all the donations are given. We will be also gathering data from the fires, and run it through machine learning software for real-time fire spreading predictions.

Here you can find the codes of the application:

In case if the government is interested, we can provide it to fire stations for tracking of the fires. Companies working with products needed in times of fire will be able to get advertisements in exchange for sponsorship. NGOs, socially aware firms and all organisations that want to financially help are welcome.

Future steps of ours are:

  • Reaching out to the authorities for implementation in the fire-fighting system and support
  • Including everyone in helping the environment and the safety of locals
  • Machine learning software for fire spreading predictions based on natural factors.
  • Machine learning for recognizing spam photos published when reporting.
