The Challenge | Spot That Fire V2.0

Your challenge is to create an application that leverages NASA's near-real-time and archival wildfire datasets along with other tools to support firefighting and fire mitigation efforts. This challenge builds on last year’s challenge of the same name by calling for innovative ideas and apps that focus on how to engage and enable citizens to assist with the entire firefighting and fire mitigation process.

Lumus

It is drone for detecting and extinguishing forest fires

Description:

Introduction to problem and its culprits

Protecting forest resources from fire is an important forest management task. Among the many sources of forest threats, fire is the most dangerous. It also poses a danger to people living in the forest or in the neighborhood. Every year, due to forest fires, thousands of people lose their homes, and hundreds die in them. In addition, tens of thousands of wild animals die. Fire destroys agricultural crops and leads to soil erosion, which in the long run leads to irreversible consequences. When the soil becomes barren as a result of a fire and then gets wet as a result of heavy rains, huge mud or earth slides can occur.

Over 90% of burnouts are caused by human activities. From here it is quite clear that fire prevention and the fight against fires have the highest priority among all other activities related to forest management.

HOW TO SOLVE IT?!

We found a solution to this problem in using a drone. Our drone will be better than a quadrocopter (low payload and range) and a helicopter or plane (high speed for an accurate hit). This is a helium-filled airship covered by flexible solar panels. It will be loaded with shells with a fire extinguishing mixture. The extinguishing process is the targeted bombardment of an inflamed area. The reaction product of the quenching mixture with fire is an organically assimilable substance that helps restore vegetation.

Features

To communicate with the outside world, we suggest using several types of connections: satellite, LPWAN and StarLink in the near future. Each type of connection has advantages and disadvantages, but they are solved using combined networks.

Common problems

On cloudy days, there may be a lack of energy problem that solar panels provide. This problem is solved by special refueling stations. The materials from which the stations will be made are recycled waste, namely plast and metal. These stations do not require the constant presence of a person since they are autonomous. Stations can collect energy from solar panels installed near the station. Nominally, without helium refueling, the airship can be in the air for up to 5 weeks.

The shape of our airship is specially selected to withstand strong winds. Even with a wind speed of 10 meters per second, our airship will not deviate from the set course

Mission Control Center

At first, the supervisor's room will be used as a control center until we have enough data to implement autopilot. Anyway, there will be a group of people who monitor the state of the airships in the control room.
