The Challenge | Spot That Fire V2.0

Your challenge is to create an application that leverages NASA's near-real-time and archival wildfire datasets along with other tools to support firefighting and fire mitigation efforts. This challenge builds on last year’s challenge of the same name by calling for innovative ideas and apps that focus on how to engage and enable citizens to assist with the entire firefighting and fire mitigation process.

FIRE TAMERS

PROBLEMS

Fire effects onhuman values, human assets and ecosystem services [1].

Consequences:

  • Firefighterswithout specific data on dimensions and needs of the event they aregoing to.
  • Lack ofaction for action.
  • Respiratorydiseases.
  • Economicimbalance at the country level due to losses caused by fires inurban and rural areas.
  • Lack of earlywarnings of possible fires.
  • Pollution(reduction in air quality).
  • Lack ofguidance for community cooperation in the face of extreme events.
  • Lack of toolsor products to control and mitigate the fire since its inception.
  • Lack of riskinformation.
  • Numbers,data, what happened now?.

OBJECTIVES

  • Build a reliable network of fire information on a global scale.
  • Facilitatecollaboration between people.
  • Create adatabase about events.

OUR PROPOSAL

Fire Tamers is a Web app, adaptable in mobile version and which canbe accessed from a browser through the internet. It allows thereports and verification of fire through the corroboration in thefield by means of citizen fire reports of images taken with the cellphone, making a cross check between the information of heat sourcesobtained from the satellites and the historical of incidence throughmachine learning.

The website notifies citizens and allow the interaction amongstakeholders through users profiles established by categories, comment forums that facilitates cooperation, information flow for theprevention, mitigation and control of these events, constituting anemergency social networking.

DESCRIPTION

Types of users:

  • Firefighter
  • Institutional
  • Civil

Users with a Firefighter and Institutional profile haveverified accounts (legal identity, institutional mail, pages thatverify identity, fire department, etc.).

Application Sections

Home (event visualization): It exposes an event location map thatincludes data from heat sources provided by the VIIRS 375m sensor anddata provided by the public as a cross-check photo with itsassociated location. The validation status of the events will bevisualized by colors (light bulbs detected by the sensor in yellowand light bulbs verified as red fires).

Information (news and activities): This section constitutes anofficial channel of information and provides a space for reports onthe current state of fires, as well as actions of interest orientedto its prevention, control and mitigation (courses, training, collection activities of funds, among others) for the general public.

Event forums: as a means of fire verification, users can create aforum on the focus of interest by reporting a fire. In the forum youcan add descriptions and information of the event. At the end of afire the forum closes and is stored in the database history.

User profile: Contains basic and personalized information of eachuser.

USER INTERACTIONS

Firefighter:

- They may activatealerts for all users about fires they deem relevant.

- They may post newsand activities relevant to all users in the information section.

- Report fires andcomment on forums.

Institutional:

- They may post newsand activities relevant to all users in the information section.

- Report fires andcomment on forums.

Civil

- Report fires and comment on forums.

Punctuation

Recognition of the work of active firefighters according to theirparticipation in events.

FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS

Calculate the rate of fire propagation to estimate its range, basedon the potential behavior (with the Rothermel algorithm) [2]

Perform fire alerts according to areas of interest to users, throughthe mapping of areas of fire risk classifying levels, based on theFFDI Meteorological Hazard Index) [4], [5] based on areas of interestdefined by the users (this by means of the insertion of layers ofinterest for the crossing, or selection of points).

Propose from the data available on our page the development of aproduct that helps with the mitigation of small fires (fire drones, fire control balls, cold air generators, among others) [6], [7]

Potential clients: Telephony, agricultural producers, governmentorganizations.
