The Challenge | Spot That Fire V2.0

Your challenge is to create an application that leverages NASA's near-real-time and archival wildfire datasets along with other tools to support firefighting and fire mitigation efforts. This challenge builds on last year’s challenge of the same name by calling for innovative ideas and apps that focus on how to engage and enable citizens to assist with the entire firefighting and fire mitigation process.

Fire Force

FireForce is a web app created so that people can collaborate in the detection of fires, as well as providing them with helpful information about safepoints, escape routes and shelters, among other useful things.

BACKGROUND

We chose this project due to the great negative impacts that fires bring.

Forest fires result in the loss of flora and fauna, sometimes of endemic species and thus the imbalance of trophic chains. In addition, the impact that fires have on the carbon cycle is important, since, in addition to releasing carbon during the combustion of vegetation and other materials, they also remove green areas and plants that absorb this compound and help it not accumulate in our atmosphere, having harmful consequences.

Fires can also affect people directly, putting them at risk. These have left many people homeless or even lifeless over time. In addition, fires in cities cause disturbances or disorder in the daily lives of populations.

That is why it is important to detect fires as soon as possible, so we can take the appropiate measures for ensuring safety and putting out the fire.

WHAT IT DOES

We developed a web application prototype that lets people collaborate in the detection of fires, as well as letting them know if there is a fire near them or some place of their interest.

The app will have an option to report a fire. It will ask for them to select the location of the fire in the map and it’s going to require them to upload a photo to confirm that there’s really a fire. It will also have an option to register a shelter if you want to offer a place for people whose homes are at risk because of a fire and need a place to be safe. Obviously, the app will also help you find a shelter and safe points near you to let you know where you can be safe in case of a fire, and it will also provide an escape route so you can get there fast and safely. Also, in the app you can access a map indicating where there has been a fire in the last 24 hours.

There is also another option in the app to let people know if a shelter needs some kind of help so they can reach out and cooperate.

Another great thing about the app is that you can sign up to receive notifications when there is a fire near you or an important place for you so you can take measures or call the authorities for help.

A problem that we had was that we wanted to make and algorithm using data provided by NASA about recent and past fires, combining them with meteorological data of the same day and time that the fire occurred, but we could not find this information.

Other inconvenience was that unfortunately we did not have the abilities needed to develop the architecture of the web application.

NASA RESOURCES

For our project we used the NASA Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS/NASA).

SPACE APPS OFFERS

To work on our project, we used the installations and facilities provided by the Space Apps Collaborators and local sponsors.

FUTURE PLANS

We seek to generate a tool that helps to know the probability of fires to avoid increasing it or be prepared to take the necessary measures.
