The Challenge | Spot That Fire V2.0

Your challenge is to create an application that leverages NASA's near-real-time and archival wildfire datasets along with other tools to support firefighting and fire mitigation efforts. This challenge builds on last year’s challenge of the same name by calling for innovative ideas and apps that focus on how to engage and enable citizens to assist with the entire firefighting and fire mitigation process.

SaferRanger

SaferRange is a collection of apps, databases and hardware that help identify and prevent the spreading of fires in forests

We took a look at forest fires, which are an indirect result of climate change and we decided to act. Armed with the information that the US spent approximately 16 billion USD to help resolve the costs which arose by wildfires in 2018, we have created hardware and software which work in combination to attempt to spot fires even before there is smoke. We have also accepted that using satellite data is not a sufficient nor a reliable resource of spotting fires, but sensors in the forests are. Our solution consists of relatively cheap spheres that have a mechanism to sense high temperatures and transmit their location. We have considered the possible collateral damage we could potentially do on animals and we're delighted to say that our solution does not interfere with nature. Software created by aspiring students with various backgrounds, so as to create an online database with the position and id of the potentially millions of such balls released into the forests.
