The Challenge | Warming Planet, Cool Ideas

Your challenge is to examine existing space and Earth projects and systems and adapt them into specific technologies that help stabilize or improve the Earth’s weather, and/or eliminate processes that cause global warming. Your solution could be a technology, a movement, an idea – let your imagination have no bounds!

Ground Zero

Ground Zero is an interactive game of intuition about fighting climate change, catered to all ages.

Background

We are not doing enough. Despite claims that we are doing enough to save the environment based on rallies and movements, our world is still heading towards disaster with climate change. Not everyone is still aware about climate change and its danger. Statistically, most developing countries have less than 50% awareness while most developed countries have less concern regarding the dangers of climate change compared to developing countries. People think that simply segregating and replacing plastic straws are enough to fight climate change but it is not enough. This is troublesome because climate change will be irreversible if negligence towards the environment still happens.

We believe that education is the best key to resolving this problem, and education is best implemented in an interactive way through a game which can be played by all ages.

Project Process

  • Planning of game stages
  • Accessing MODIS/VIIRS Web Service Global Subset API using scripts
  • Creation of sprites and backgrounds using Photoshop
  • Creation of scripts and implementation of game assets using Unity Engine

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to educate and reinforce people's mindsets towards fighting climate change.

Features

  • Use of MODIS MOD11A2 Data Product, to detect near-current land surface temperatures on the user's current location.
  • Series of mini-games in demonstrating more efficient ways to save the environment, not just segregating trash
  • Detected land surface temperatures affects the graphical display of the game.
  • Pixel graphics to engage from children to adults.

Resources

  • Unity Engine for implementation of game assets
  • MODIS MOD11A2 from NASA
  • Visual Studio to create the game's scripts in C#
  • Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator in creating the game assets
