The Challenge | Warming Planet, Cool Ideas

Your challenge is to examine existing space and Earth projects and systems and adapt them into specific technologies that help stabilize or improve the Earth’s weather, and/or eliminate processes that cause global warming. Your solution could be a technology, a movement, an idea – let your imagination have no bounds!

DEON

Developing an APP where people can offer recyclable waste to those interested in recycling.

REVERSE

INTRODUCTION

The solid waste segment is one of the major contributors to the reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere, thereby reducing the greenhouse effect.

According to a survey conducted in 2012 by the Royal Dutch Solid Waste Association (NVRD) in partnership with the Brazilian Association of Public Cleaning and Special Waste Companies (Abrelpe), it was pointed out that the reduction could reach 57 million tons of CO2 in Brazil (EXAME).

In 2019, according to NASA data, CO2 emissions reached 412 parts per million.

The increase of gases in the atmosphere, especially CO2, contributes to the greenhouse effect. As a result, the gas layer becomes thicker, making it harder for solar radiation to spread and causing more heat retention. And it is this heat retention that causes Earth's temperature rise.

In short, global warming is a climate phenomenon that consists of rising average temperatures on the planet and ocean waters. It is the result of intensification of the greenhouse effect.

Eighteen of the hottest years on earth took place from 2001 to 2019, with 2016 being the hottest year.

A plastic bottle that weighs 32.5 grams produces the equivalent of 200g of carbon dioxide. That is, 5 plastic bottles correspond to 1kg of CO2.

WHY

According to the UN Brazil, around 12% of most municipal solid waste is made of plastic of one kind or another, and 40% of all the world's waste is burned.

According to the website of the Chamber of Deputies, the correct recycling contributes to prevent the planet warming. Recycling avoids the execution of a significant part of the production processes. Most production processes always emit, directly or indirectly, carbon dioxide particles, which are the most harmful of greenhouse gases (including CH4 methane, nitrous oxide and water vapors). Thus, whenever a part of the production processes is eliminated, control is made in the forms responsible for global warming.

According to the Ecodebate website, we produce about 192,000 tons of garbage. Of this total, about 41%, or 79,000 tons, is not correctly allocated.

A survey by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea) shows that if all the reusable waste currently sent to landfills and dumps across the country were recycled, the wealth generated could reach $ 8 billion annually.

According to scientists at the University of Chicago, we have little time until we use all available resources on Earth planet.

It is clear that improperly disposed waste harms the entire environment, creating an imbalance that contributes to global warming.

HOW

Developing an environment where people can offer recyclable waste to those interested in recycling.

WHAT

Collecting recyclables APP based on sharing between population, collectors and cooperatives. Check out some photos of our prototype:

Market research:

COOPERAGO

APP RELIX

APP KATAKI

RECICLER (OPEN SOURCE)

Supplier user:

After a registration, the supplier indicates the “garbage” by category, which will be displayed in its location. The nearest interested party will confirm the collection, and the application will inform the product status until it arrives at the recycling. This way, the user will know if their garbage has reached its final destination.

After cycle closure, the supplier user will receive points that will be accumulated and can be exchanged for products, services or discounts at partner companies. In addition to the game, the user can share their experience and their contribution to the planet.

Collector User:

Garbage collected within the stipulated time, the collector user must signal in the app that the product was delivered to its the recycling (or processing) company.

The collector user will have an evaluation (score) made by the supplier user, which will indicate the effectiveness, punctuality and other items.

GOALS

1- Increase recycling numbers, reduce waste in the environment and CO2 emission.

2- Raise education and public awareness about the problem of waste consumption and environmental impacts.

UNIQUE IDENTITY

1- Free

2- Points system (gamification) for users to exchange products and services or discounts in sustainable partners.

How to get points:

 Earn points just who offers their garbage in APP;

 The points do not expire;

 The amount of points will be based on volume and material type;

 Levels based on user rank (for example: category "seed" for 100 points, category "tree" for 500 points);

3- Product tracking;

4- Works regardless location: Users from anywhere can access garbage information from anywhere in the world;

5- Sharing the use of the platform to engage other people;

6- News, based on NASA database.

LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE

According to a study by Unicamp, an average person produces 1kg of trash a day. Of these, 77% could be recycled and this is equivalent to 30% by weight of emitted CO2, or 231 grams.

Thus, a single individual prevents the emission of approximately 84 kilograms of CO2 per year if recycling is chosen.

If only 1,000 individuals join DEON, we will no longer emit 84 tons of CO2 per year.
