The Challenge | Warming Planet, Cool Ideas

Your challenge is to examine existing space and Earth projects and systems and adapt them into specific technologies that help stabilize or improve the Earth’s weather, and/or eliminate processes that cause global warming. Your solution could be a technology, a movement, an idea – let your imagination have no bounds!

Cool Cruisin' Cars

Our pitch is for automated, electric, self driving cars, that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and prevent wrecks caused by human error.

The files MUST be run using Dr. Java, as they operate through a Dr. Java project file. By running the "CarsBaby" file, you will see an example of how these cars will operate at an intersection. The "BadCarsBaby"

Our file depicts an example of an intersection running smoothly with automated vehicles. The automation of the vehicles is intended to reduce fuel emissions by minimizing people sitting idle in traffic by maximizing the efficiency of cars moving on the road via automation. We consider our solution a "long term solution" that is designed to improve the overall infrastructure of a city as a whole in the long run, and help save the environment in the process.

Furthermore, we have plans for slowly integrating the automated vehicle movement into cities, by introducing more automated public transit and cooperating with large businesses to introduce automated vehicles into the pre-existing infrastructure.

Our actual thought process behind the vehicular automation is that all the vehicles within the city are connected to a wide-spread network covering the city as a whole. This network will be maintained and spread from our "beacon" points, which are essentially network towers spread across the city to ensure connection to the central network for all the vehicles. The vehicles all communicate with each other and are therefore able to calculate exactly how quickly they need to move to hit any given intersection or perform any traffic maneuver to safely and efficiently reach their destinations. Ideally, the only time any of the automated vehicles would have to stop would be to pick up or drop off cargo and/or passengers

To mitigate fears of automation, we've taken many precautions within our plan. We intend to construct crossing bridges for pedestrians so that the automated vehicles moving quickly on the road will not be interrupted by human error, and pedestrian traffic would not be interrupted by the vehicles. Furthermore, the inclusion of the beacon points would create jobs for the city due to their need for maintenance and troubleshooting.
