The Visionaries has received the following awards and nominations. Way to go!
Overview:
The solution developed by us is the AIR IoT, a project that aims not only to inform the population about air quality and the consequences of bad air quality, but also to raise awareness and promote activities and good habits to change the current scenario.
The main component is the idea of having an IoT(Internet of Things) that is constantly verifying CO2 and other greenhouse gas concentration levels. Each device is made up of an Arduino Nano, a NR24l01 module for wireless communication and a MQ135 gas sensor for air analysis.(RF module and gas sensor module may vary from final iteration.)
The sensor transmits the data to an online database where it is treated and concatenated with the available data by NASA's CO2 observer satellites and after that made available to the public through simple visual data and will provide insight into what actions can be taken to reduce these gas emissions.
The reason behind this idea is that having local atmospheric readings can help predict and prevent greenhouse gas concentrations and harmful fluctuations. This idea can also inform the public about health risks caused by carbon dioxide other greenhouse gases and other pollutants that are directly associated with artificial CO2 emissions.
Such data can be used by real estate agencies to show their clients which regions have better air quality and what time the quality changes, by city halls to enforce rules and regulations on air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and by fire departments that can use the data to investigate possible fires due to patterns in CO2 emission data.
Background:
The problem we are looking to solve is the lack of adequate prediction and prevention of local man-made CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions by using gas sensor devices connected by IoT applications. The choice of directing the measurements to local and specific areas is due to concentrated hotspots such as industries, vehicles and/or fires. The public can have access to data directed to the air quality in the area and compare that data to global variables detected by NASA satellites such as OCO-2 and Aura L2.
The data from the OCO-2 satellite used was seen to have a low resolution. Because of this it became clear that a solution with a higher resolution could be used. Using IoT systems are becoming cheaper, more widespread and more reliable so it's a good platform to apply this concept.
The impact of such an endeavour is not limited to what has been said previously. The availability of this kind of data can be used in public health applications.
The relevance of such a project is the social and environmental changes, locally and globally, that can lead the planet to a more sustainable place and with less emissions of greenhouse gases.
