See You, Moon. See You Soon!

Humanity will return to the moon. But this time it will be different. Our satellite is still the same, but let's get to know it in another way. Through the eyes of a woman. The first woman to set foot on the moon. What will she do? What does she think when she comes to Earth from the moon's surface? The return to the moon opens up an opportunity for each of us. What will we say when we step there too?

Our story on the moon begins with a man's effort. Neil Armstrong launched one of the most dangerous missions in space, at a time when most engineers, astronauts and politicians were men. Many years later, we live a new story. And new stories need new characters. We already went to the moon, but now it must be truly ours. Where is the missing footprint?

ARTMOON Team's artistic proposal is the video The Missing Footprint. Produced in one-minute stop motion, the video tells the story of two women in two moments of time and space.

Luna Eagle was a child in the 1960s. She creates storytelling with Mechanical’s robots and builds wooden rockets with Tinkertoy. She likes to observe space and see the starry sky with the naked-eye. From her couch, she experiences it as the first images of Earth, seen from space.

Over time, Luna Eagle's life has been impacted by several discoveries. The conquest of the moon was also a scientific achievement. Our sneakers, the comfy foam of our pillows, the thermometer, the heart rate monitors, the Teflon frying pans, the microwave, disposable diapers, the cordless gadgets, and the contact lenses were the result of space missions. All these innovations went from generation to generation, like the dream of the moon.

Now this dream comes to Luna Orion. She is 10 years old, loves night sky watching apps, eclipse research and colorful moons. She dreams one day of stepping on the moon, like the first woman to be on Artemis Mission.

The one who inspire people with different styles, ideas, and contributions will make it to the moon. They are the missing footprint in search of science, tourism, and a secure base for a trip to the other planets of the Solar System.

The topic of the Artistic Face of the Moon provokes reflection on other practical challenges proposed by NASA that are equally important. As we believe there is no science without inspiration, we built this project by the possibility of exploring the human and beautiful side of space achievements. A way to give back to the moon the inspiration it gives us, even when it is New Moon, phase when it is erased in the sky.

One of the good points in designing the project was how we came up with a solution and kept it from the start. We were able to work in tune and flow at all stages, which made the process more productive and agile. The challenge was to think of a solution that closes itself, because the current artistic proposals include engagement and participation, elements that point to the future of this project.

The Future, post SpaceApps Challenge

Recognizing that space missions are still viewed with strangeness and doubt by many people, so beyond video, we think toward the direction of The Missing Footprint Project with actions around the world, such as views on video mapping of the moon at strategic locations. Planet and also with the production of educational events in schools, with the participation of the characters Luna Eagle and Luna Orion.

Technical specifications

The entire process of illustration of the video was done manually in legal sheet, with digitization through CamScanner. Two apps were used for edition: Stop Motion Studio and FlipaClip.

A humanidade vai voltar à Lua. Mas, dessa vez, será diferente. Nosso satélite é o mesmo, mas vamos conhecê-lo de um outro jeito. Pelos olhos de uma mulher. A primeira mulher a pisar na Lua. O que ela vai fazer? O que ela vai pensar quando avistar a Terra a partir da superfície da Lua? O retorno a ela abre uma chance para cada um de nós. O que vamos dizer quando também pisarmos lá?

A nossa história na Lua começa com o sacrifício de um homem. Neil Armstrong se lançou em uma das missões mais perigosas do espaço, em um tempo em que a maioria dos engenheiros, astronautas e políticos eram homens. Gerações depois, vivemos uma nova história. E novas histórias precisam de novos personagens. Já fomos à Lua, mas agora ela precisa ser verdadeiramente nossa. Onde está a pegada que faltava?

A proposta artística da Equipe ARTMOON é o vídeo The Missing Footprint. Produzido em stop motion, com um minuto de duração, o vídeo conta as histórias de duas mulheres em dois momentos do tempo e do Espaço.

Luna Eagle foi criança na década de 60. Criava histórias de faz de conta com os robôs de brinquedo da Mechanical e construía foguetes de madeira com o Tinkertoy. Gostava do Espaço e de ver o céu estrelado a olho nu. Do seu sofá, ela experimenta as primeiras imagens da Terra vista do espaço e, não por acaso, leva o nome da cápsula da Apollo 11.

Ao longo do tempo, a vida de Luna Eagle sofre o impacto de várias descobertas. A conquista da Lua foi também uma conquista científica. Foi das missões espaciais que vieram nossos tênis de última geração, a espuma confortável de nossos travesseiros, termômetro e monitores cardíacos, frigideiras teflon, microondas, fraldas descartáveis, aparelhos sem fio e lentes de contato. Todas inovações passaram de geração para geração, feito o sonho da Lua.

Esse sonho chega às mãos de Luna Orion. Ela tem 10 anos, ama aplicativos de observação do céu noturno, pesquisa sobre eclipses e luas coloridas. Sonha um dia pisar na Lua, feito a primeira mulher que estará na Missão Artemis.

Pessoas com diferentes estilos, ideias e contribuições vão chegar até a Lua. Elas são a pegada que faltava, em busca de ciência, turismo e base segura para uma viagem aos outros planetas do Sistema Solar.

O tópico da Face Artística da Lua invoca reflexão diante de outros desafios práticos propostos pela Nasa e igualmente importantes. Como acreditamos que não há ciência sem inspiração, construímos esse projeto pela possibilidade de explorar o lado humano e belo das conquistas espaciais. Uma forma de devolver à Lua a inspiração que ela nos entrega, mesmo quando está em sua fase Nova, apagada no céu.

Um dos pontos positivos na montagem do projeto foi como idealizamos uma solução e nos mantemos nela desde o início. Enquanto equipe, conseguimos atuar com sintonia e fluidez em todas as etapas, o que tornou o processo mais produtivo e ágil. O desafio foi pensar em uma solução que se encerra-se em si, pois as propostas artísticas atuais incluem engajamento e participação, elementos que apontamos para o futuro deste projeto.

O Futuro, pós SpaceApps Challenge

Reconhecemos que missões espaciais ainda são vistas com estranheza e dúvida por muitas pessoas, então, além do vídeo, pensamos em dar continuidade ao Projeto The Missing Footprint com ações ao redor do mundo, como exibições em vídeo mapping da Lua em locais estratégicos do Planeta e produção de eventos educativos em escolas, com a visita das personagens Luna Eagle e Luna Orion.

Todo o processo de ilustração do vídeo foi feito de forma manual em folha de ofício, com digitalização através do CamScanner. Dois aplicativos foram utilizados para a edição: o Stop Motion Studio e o FlipaClip.
