The Art Side of the Moon challenge offers a chance to be artistic and inspire other non-astronauts like ourselves who dream of going to the Moon but who do not have the opportunity. Our video inspires people to continue lunar exploration through a first-person perspective of the transitions in space travel—from the Apollo 11 Moon landing to future hopes of returning to the Moon in 2024.
The average viewer experiences the sense of unity felt in America as NASA accomplished the Apollo 11 Mission, and as the video ends with the subject waking up on the Moon, viewers grasp the reality of future lunar exploration. Throughout the developmental process, we encountered many challenges to overcome. One issue was figuring out how to make the recordings of exploring our virtual worlds smooth and more realistic. We also had some trouble initially when attempting to combine our Solid Edge elements with the functionality of Unity. We ended up having to keep the two elements separate but rewrote part of our story to accommodate for this.
In our video, we utilized NASA images, videos, and audio clips that relate to the Apollo 11 mission and future plans for further Moon exploration. We also implemented various NASA-provided 3D models to place inside our animated world. We used this data because although we are not experts in the aerospace field, we wanted our work to be as realistic as possible.
Luckily, the creator of The Art Side of the Moon challenge, Andrew Denio, was a local sponsor at the Huntsville hackathon, and we were able to talk to him about his expectations for solutions to his challenge in person. He helped us better define our story behind the person in our video and develop our idea for the “dream sequence.”
We could improve our project by enhancing our virtual sets and making them more life-like. This project could be expanded to make a first-person virtual reality simulation in which users could experience the Apollo 11 Moon landing, as well as experience NASA’s plans for 2024 space travel and staying on the Moon.
