The Challenge | Dust Yourself Off

The Apollo missions showed us that lunar dust not only clung to everything and was impossible to fully remove, but it was also dangerous to humans and damaging to spacecraft systems. Your challenge is to develop a way to detect, map, and mitigate lunar dust to reduce the effects on astronauts or spacecraft interior systems.

UNDUST

The purpose of the project is to remove the dust from the Space Suit at the entering the Lunar Module, since it is a serious problem for the systems and the health of the Crew. This system in particular uses physics and materials to overcome this problem.

UnDust

THE SYSTEM IS BASED ON 4 COMPONENTS

•A velvet material with great tendency to acquire charge and by rubbing remove the largest particles.
•The Electrostatic will charge the particles of Lunar dust so that they will repel each other, releasing the minor particles found in the Suit.
•The particles will be sucked by a vacuum system.

•The moon dust can have 10 to 13% of Iron, so we will use magnets that easily attract particles with these characteristics.

THE MODEL

The prototype was designed and printed with a 3D printer. It is controlled by an arduino board, receives the signal and puts the servomechanical system into operation.

The new design operates as a 4 axis robotic arm that uses those same four original principles in a more versatile and efficient way.
