The Challenge | Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Sample!

You are the astronaut/robotic mission lead tasked with bringing valuable specimens from the Moon back to Earth for further study. How will you evaluate lunar samples quickly and effectively before or while still on the mission? How will you differentiate samples of potential scientific value from less interesting material?

SHORTCUTS

Among tons of moon rocks, only a few have great scientific value to compensate the time, energy, and displacement to bring it to earth.

Our project aims to make the necessary distinctions so that we can select and analyze the samples with higher scientific value, cataloging and mapping the environment where hover runs.

Selecting pattern through a visual system and at a second sensory.

This system analyse the light spectrum considering the texture and coloration in addition to the shape and heat diffusion in the body, with these shapes, we can make a first mapping of different materials, which should be analyzed later.

Next, one of these materials is selected for sensory analysis. A small sample is collected through a drill and deposited in a small isolated compartment, where analyzes such as thermal irradiation can obtain a signature of the material, identifying it so that it can be compared with known materials or cataloged as a new one, and taken to a laboratory for further testing.

In addition to thermal irradiation, color data is collected again inside the drill hole, where it no longer has dust contamination, and visible spectrum reflection tests is done, to gives us information about the materials.
