The Challenge | Build a Planet

Your challenge is to create a game that will allow players to customize the characteristics of a star and design planets that could reasonably exist in that star system. Ensure that this game provides an educational experience for players!

CHON

What will you build from chaos and havoc? We’ll build planets! By colliding meteoroids which possess the CHON elements, you’ll form planets, learning about their composition and events of the cosmos.

Chon

Our goal is to create a game that makes the knowledge of astrophysics (more specifically, the process of the formation of planets, and how they become inhabitable) more accessible for teen audiences. We aim to provide an educative and engaging experience, with a high degree of interactivity between players.

The project is a board game, where the ultimate goal is to create a planet with inhabitable conditions. A team of up to 6 players will need to cooperate so that they can create a planet with the basic conditions for the thriving of life, and manage these resources after the planet's creation. Through this journey, they'll face multiple events that the universe will send their way, which bring real knowledge about the process that leads to a planet's creation.

Our main challenge in the creation of this project was understanding this very process, and how our planet, for example, was formed. We used NASA data and articles so we could have the basic grasp of how the collisions between meteoroids kickstarted the process of creation of our planet. Another challenge was how would we make the game simple and engaging enough, so that it'd be fun, but at the same time as scientifically accurate as possible. At the same time, we wanted to make the game accessible for schools in poorer conditions, all around the globe, so we aimed to make a basic version of the game which would be downloadable and printable.
