Using metal grid power transfer and removing IFE systems we aim to cut down on aircraft weight by considerable amounts.
Our solution suggests small changes to greatly impact the future of all aircraft designs.
The first part of our idea was to completely remove traditional IFE programs (tablets) and replace them with wifi and apps on mobile phones. This cuts out a large amount of unnecessary wires and as a first step is simple but effective.
The metal grid powering system was first implemented by Nextek Power systems who implemented this and used it to power buildings. This part of our idea focuses on removing all the wires needed for power transfer around the aircraft. We hope to add the grid in place of some support materials so no added weight is applied to the aircraft.
The next steps would be implementing wireless mesh networks and optic fibers around more safety critical areas as the metal grid would be unable to work in the wings of the plane due to safety reasons. These can also be used as fail safe features around the whole plane.
Our solutions can easily be put in action on new models and also older models too. And with the money saved on fuel cost we hope that it will be something that aircraft companies are willing to invest into.
With the focus on environmental awareness in our communities we wanted to tackle the less talked about issue: air-travel. It is a huge contributor to greenhouse gasses and global warming. It is said that air-travel has a much worse impact than any other mode of transport yet what are we doing to combat this? What is the best course of action? Make aircraft lighter. This way we burn less fuel and have less flights, but this is only the beginning, making air-travel more environmentally friendly is definitely possible, our solution is just one solution out of many to help lessen the damage done when traveling in the air
