The Challenge | Orbital Scrap Metal — The Video Game

Nuts, bolts, spent rocket stages, and broken pieces of satellites orbiting Earth are just a few of the many thousands of items known as orbital debris, or space junk. Your challenge is to create an orbital debris collection videogame web-app! You may build upon NASA’s Spacebirds and real data.

Operation Cut Out Waste

Use a rocket to collect space junk. You will sell this space junk to upgrade your rocket to continue to collect bigger space junk more efficiently. The more debris you collect, the cleaner outer space gets!

For our project, the challenge was to create a video game web-app to educate people on orbital debris and motivate them to think of ways to capture and dispose of it. To do this, we designed a game to raise awareness about orbital debris and how it affects outer space.

Challenges faced:

  • Team had to learn how to use Construct 2
  • Hand drawn sprites
  • Programming

Game Objective(s):

Collect space junk to sell to upgrade your rocket. Upgrading your rocket allows you to collect bigger space junk, increase speed, and obtain more health. The space junk turns straight into money.

Instructions:

  1. Move your cursor to control the rocket.
  2. Move the rocket to collect space junk that corresponds with your rocket size.
  3. Use money to upgrade rocket.
  4. Use rocket upgrades (junk collection, speed, health) to collect more junk.
