The Challenge | Orbital Scrap Metal — The Video Game

Nuts, bolts, spent rocket stages, and broken pieces of satellites orbiting Earth are just a few of the many thousands of items known as orbital debris, or space junk. Your challenge is to create an orbital debris collection videogame web-app! You may build upon NASA’s Spacebirds and real data.

Circumvent

“Circumvent” is a fun online game to escape from space debris. We developed it to educate every people from children to adults about the problem of space debris.

Project Overview

We considered that the increase of space debris in the orbit is a serious problem now. However, we are feeling that many people are still do not know about this problem well. Therefore, we developed a online game to educate people about the space debris problem. We named this game “Circumvent” because the mission in this game is to avoid debris, and our goal after this project is to avoid the future that the orbit around the earth is full of debris.

Background

The number of space debris is still increasing. In 2019, there are about 34,000 objects more than 10 cm, about 900,000 objects from 1 cm to 10 cm, and about 128 million objects from 1 mm to 1 cm.

According to JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), there are two cases to generate space debris. One case is a satellite breaks up or explodes by itself, and the other case is two satellites collide and break up. If we launch more and more satellites, these satellites occupy limited space in the orbit, and the risk of collision will increase. In fact, such collisions are already happened several times.

Satellites finished their jobs will be floating in the orbit for a while as debris. These debris which floating in low altitude orbit will go into earth’s atmosphere in several years, however, debris which floating in high altitude orbit will be in the orbit for hundreds years.

Product Description

All you need to do in this game is just avoiding many debris flying from everywhere. You will lose when you collide with these debris. We designed this game quite simple and easy to play, you will use only the closs key. Therefore, everyone from children to adults can enjoy it. This game is posted online, so everyone around the world can play it.

  • To each debris floating in this game, we assigned actual debris’ data picked up from NASA’s database (https://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/spacebirds). Players can see these data when they collide with debris in the game so they can know specific data and can be familiar with them.
  • We designed original Japanese anime-like characters for some debris. When you collide with them, these cute characters will be registered for gallery page, and you can see them at anytime.

Our Goal

This game is representing an actual situation we are likely to be faced in the future. If we do not stop the increase of debris, serious collision of debris and rocket or satellite will happen. Therefore, our goal is to avoid this situation by attracting the interest of people through this game and let them think about this problem.
