Space Cleansers has received the following awards and nominations. Way to go!

Global Nominee

The Challenge | Orbital Scrap Metal — The Video Game

Nuts, bolts, spent rocket stages, and broken pieces of satellites orbiting Earth are just a few of the many thousands of items known as orbital debris, or space junk. Your challenge is to create an orbital debris collection videogame web-app! You may build upon NASA’s Spacebirds and real data.

Space Cleansers

This browser-based game will teach players about the challenges of orbital debris, using realistic 2-D physics. Players must fly a ship in Earth's orbit to collect scrap, without creating more scrap than they remove.

This web game was programmed this weekend using JavaScript. Orbital physics and collision detection are in place. Players control a ship that orbits Earth near satellites and space debris, and must use conservation of momentum to maneuver their ship to collect debris.

Next steps include drawing upon NASA's Spacebirds data to give each satellite and piece of debris the identity and characteristics of an actual space object. Players will be able to mouseover game objects and gain information about the corresponding real-world objects in space. We will also add gameplay levels and scenarios that gradually introduce players to the complexity of orbital debris management. A final future update plan involves giving players a choice of ship upgrades that will allow new ways to interact with the movement physics.
