Awards & Nominations

Spaceknights has received the following awards and nominations. Way to go!

Global Nominee

The Challenge | Orbital Scrap Metal — The Video Game

Nuts, bolts, spent rocket stages, and broken pieces of satellites orbiting Earth are just a few of the many thousands of items known as orbital debris, or space junk. Your challenge is to create an orbital debris collection videogame web-app! You may build upon NASA’s Spacebirds and real data.

Orbital Space Janitor (OSJ)

Orbital Space Janitor is a comically named game with a serious topic. In this game, you will be helping NASA take dangerous space debris out of the Earth's orbit, in order to protect its vessels.

Spaceknights

We are three software developers of varying levels of skill who do game development for fun. As a result, this project was a good chance to develop our skills and further challenge ourselves. In our country, Montenegro, events such as these are rare, so this was a great opportunity for us.

In order to create this game, we used the game engine Unity which requires knowledge in C#. We struggled with that at first, as most of our knowledge lies in JavaScript, but we adapted quite quickly. If you want to check out our code, feel free. Its open source, and can be found at the bottom of this page.

For graphics, we used a simple pixel art app called Piskel, which you can find here: [https://www.piskelapp.com/]

Our next challenge was time management. There were so many aspects of the game that were difficult to make, so splitting our tasks was very important. Thankfully, this was one of our strengths. Although our programming varies in skill, we are all proficient in different areas. We divided the work into three parts; graphics, interface and controls.

In reflection, this project was a great opportunity for us, both in terms of improving our programming skills and in terms of getting our projects out to as many people as possible. We hope to participate in projects such as these in the future, and that we will improve even further by then!
