The Challenge | The Trans-Neptunian Spaceway

Like the Trans-Siberian Railroad linked remote parts of Asia to the West, the Trans-Neptunian Spaceway (TNS) takes tourists and entrepreneurs to the newly accessible region of our solar system beyond Neptune. Your challenge is to develop marketing materials and/or tools for the Trans-Neptunian Spaceway!

Nep-tune with us!

It's 2045. The Space Jam Inc. inaugurates the first Trans-Neptunian Spaceway. We are ready to bring you to the Kuiper belt on board the Diana2, for touristic or economical aims. No problems about radiation, gravity, food or legal system. Looking for staff.

Space Jam

The challenge we chose, the development of marketing material for a Trans-Neptunian Spaceway, submitted us to more challenges to face.
Our first question was about the aim that, in 2045, might induce someone to go through this particular travel and we found out 2 possibilities:

  • First, space tourism, which nowadays is getting more and more curiosity. We speculated that, in 2045, it might have become a popular way of tourism, and the Kuiper Belt offers lots of opportunities in this context, such as the lowest gravitational forces in the Solar System of Haumea, Pluto cryogenic vulcanoes of or Triton geysers.
  • Than, we also speculated about an economical interest in this destination, so we thought as a leading company in import-export sector of hydrocarbon, tholin and helium, which are present in great amount on Pluto, Triton and Neptune respectively.

CHALLENGES

The biggest challenges we had to face in this project were:

  1. Propulsion system
  2. Artificial gravity
  3. Deflection shield
  4. Juridical system
  5. Life on board

1) PROPULSION SYSTEM

The study of a pluasible propulsion system was necessary for a quantitative estimation of duration of the trip, which unaivodably concerns also other challenges.
The proposed propulsion system is based on 2 elements:

  • The fusion driver rocket, a nuclear fusion rocket model which has already been experimented by NASA. In our prevision, this propulsion system could be able to accelerate the spaceship up to speed of 65 km/s; after this acceleration, it is no longer used for thrust generation, but it continues to produce energy to supply all the ship utilities.
  • The JEGS (Jam Enterprise Golden Sail), a solar sail made of KaptonPremium, a highly reflective material which, in our assumptions, could replace the Kapton in 2030s. Like other solar sails, it uses sunlight to propel the vehicle through space by reflecting solar photons. This way of propulsion is "eco-friendly", without waste of any propellant: Space Jam Inc. takes care of our universe.

This propulsion system, after solving a non-linear differential equations system, allows to reach the Kuiper belt in less than 3 years.
This calculation does not regard of possible gravitational slingshots.

2) ARTIFICIAL GRAVITY

The toroidal form of the spaceship allows the use of a periodic system, calibrated by ionic engines, with the effects of gravity simulated in the interior of our ship.
To gain conditions similar to what we have on Earth in the exterior parts of the Diana2, the spaceship has to gain a rotation of 2 spins/minute.
Arrangement of facilities and utilities on board Diana2 is dealt considering its specific requirements and the variation of gravity along radius.

3) DEFLECTION SHIELD

The design of this shield was necessary to provide protection against cosmic rays radiation and high variable energetic solar particles, hypervelocity impacts from debris or micrometeorites and the extreme heating environment experienced during enrty into planetary atmospheres.
The additional presence of a superconductive circuits shield preserves the integrity of fundamental electronic devices on board, as well as the health of passengers.
This purpose is achieved by the creation of a mini-magnetosphere around the spaceship: in fact, manipulating the particles coming from the Sun in the form of plasma, it is possible to obtain a deflector shield, whose effectiveness could be enhanced by the injection of additional cold plasma from the spacecraft.

4) JURIDICAL SYSTEM

Considering the journey length it was necessary, according to our group, to define what kind of laws to refer to in case of crimes, violence or acts damaging to the peaceful vibe it is required on board.
For what concern the set of laws, being the experience open to every Earth citizen from every nation, it is necessary to refer to internation law.
It is also necessary to include on the spaceship experts in this field, in the eventuality of a trial, such as judges and lawyers.
Diana2 also provides some restraint cells to vincolate dangerous people.

5) LIFE ON BOARD

Particularly, our interest was in find out a solution for the "Space Diet", because of the journey length and the large amount of passengers, which makes impossible every idea of food supply coming from Earth.
Therefore, on the Diana2 it will be possible to grow different kinds of edible vegetables (lettuce, carrots, wheat, soy, rice, potatoes, etc.), by the creation of a suitable microclimate, using special LED illumination and a robust temperature and humidity control.
The space diet will also comprehend edible insects (high protein and energetic food), bred on the same spaceship, and cultured meat, produced by in vitro cultivation of animal cells.
There will also be a section where ornamental plants will grow to help people on board to relax in an Earth-like place.

We produced a brochure for tourists, a website mock-up where these information are explained in details and a 3D modeling of Diana2, by the software CATIA.
