The Challenge | Rising Water

Sea levels are rising around the world, and approximately 40% of the human population lives in coastal zones. Your challenge is to help communicate the impacts of rising oceans by creating a visualization tool that illustrates the changes caused by rising sea levels in your region.

Rising Oceans

Our purpose is to raise awareness on oceans rising. With this animation, you can see sea level rising and the environmental changes caused by it throughout the years.

Background:

  • Ocean has been rising as an effect of climate change. As the sea level rise, the environment is changing with it. While sea level rise, the temperature increases, salinity decreases and, ice at the poles melts. Every year, oceans approximately rise 0,13 inches (3,2 mm). The rise in sea level is getting accelerating and people will suffer from this situation for that reason we should find ways to prevent it.
  • Ocean rise accelerates over time.
  • Sea level rise is 8 inches (about 23 cm) since 1880.
  • It is predicted to the ocean to be rise between 10 and 30 inches (26 to 77 centimeters) by 2100 with temperatures warming 1,5°C by the report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

What can we do to prevent sea level rising and protect our future?

  • Plant more plants and trees
  • Don't waste the energy
  • Use public transportation or electronic cars
  • Reducing green gases
  • Upgrading sewage systems
  • Build seawalls
  • Raise roads
  • Use beaches as barriers

Challenges Faced:

  • I am 15 years old high school student. We were going to do this project with my friend. But she said that we can't finish it on time, the last day. And she did not participate. Then I had to do this on my own. And the applications for editing videos are mostly not free and it was difficult to find a free app.
